Condolences from the African Bioimaging Consortium on the passing of Spencer Shorte

The African BioImaging Consortium is deeply saddened at the news of the sudden passing of Spencer Shorte.

Spencer was a core figure in the global bioimaging and microscopy communities, and a staunch advocate for core facilities and investing in research infrastructure and expertise. He was an ally and champion of efforts in democratising microscopy and building capacity around the world, including Africa. Spencer had served on the Scientific Advisory Board of ABIC from our start in 2021. He brought insights from his wealth of experience with CTLS and a rich scientific career with Institut Pasteur. He was also a valuable supporter of our outreach efforts and programs, particularly in Francophone regions of Africa.

It was an immense privilege to have Spencer's support, guidance and encouragement, for ABIC itself, and many of us individually. He was always generous with his time, wisdom and wit, and a mentor and inspiration to many. The world has lost his kind and gentle spirit far too soon, and he will be sorely missed. Our condolences go out to his family and friends in this time.
