Training & Education Working Group

Overview

The training and education working group aims to provide African Imaging Scientists with opportunities to gain in-depth knowledge on and expertise in various aspects of bioimaging, from the basic level to advanced microscopy knowledge and skill; ensure African imaging experts have a platform to share their knowledge where they can contribute to the upliftment of imaging communities all over Africa; and connecting African diasporas with African researchers to facilitate knowledge sharing & collaborations

The working group acts as a vehicle to ensure ABIC is able to:

  • Ensure the training of African researchers by providing a platform for "train-the-trainer" programs in collaboration with international experts.

  • Enable imaging scientists to enhance their skill and expertise by connecting members with local and international experts.

  • Foster collaboration through developing microscopy curricula and organising training events.

ABIC Training & Access Survey

The ABIC Training & Education Working Group is currently conducting a continent-wide survey to understand how bioimaging techniques are used across Africa and to identify gaps in the knowledge required to use the imaging equipment currently available on the continent. The insights from this survey will directly inform:

  • The development of targeted training programs in microscopy & bioimaging

  • Strategic interventions tailored to the actual needs of African researchers

  • Strengthening partnerships between African institutions and global bioimaging initiatives

  • Accurate representation & communication of Africa's biomaging training landscape

In order to make the greatest possible impact, this survey needs to be representative of as much of the continent's bioimaging scientists as possible, therefore it is imperative that we share it far and wide. Please do encourage your colleagues to take it as well.

Click below to take the survey. It is short and will take 5 minutes to complete.

ABIC Introduction to Microscopy Curriculum

In an effort to provide accessible, foundational training in light microscopy, the ABIC Training & Education Working Group developed a six-part microscopy curriculum. This curriculum was developed to encourage viewers not only to apply the knowledge, but to one day teach it as well.

Originally presented over two days in July 2025, the Introduction to Microscopy Curriculum covers:

  • Introduction to Microscopy

  • Brightfield & Darkfield

  • Fluorescence Microscopy

  • Sample Preparation

  • Image Analysis

  • Microscopy Experiments
