Mentorship Pilot
Programme
Led by the 'Students in Bioimaging' Working Group
The African BioImaging Consortium (ABIC) Student Working Group is excited to launch a pilot mentorship programme designed to support students across Africa who are working with microscopy and image analysis.
This initiative grew out of discussions within the Student Working Group, where many felt that additional mentorship could help advance both technical expertise and career development. While mentoring opportunities exist within home institutions, mentors with specialised microscopy and imaging experience in Africa are often limited. ABIC’s unique community provides an ideal platform to connect students with mentors who can guide them in both technical and professional growth.
1. What the mentorship programme offers:

-
A six-month pilot mentorship period (with check-ins at 3 and 6 months with the student working group).
-
Pairings based on specific sample, instrument, or application expertise, or for career interests.
-
Flexibility: relationships may be short-term (e.g. troubleshooting a technique) or longer-term collaborations.
-
Focus on either technical skills (experimental design, sample prep, image analysis) and soft skills (career guidance, networking, project management).
2. What it is not:
This programme does not replace project supervisors. Instead, it provides additional support and perspectives from peers and senior members of the microscopy community within ABIC and partners.

3. How will it work?

-
Interested students will be required to complete the Mentee Application Form.
-
This form will allow applicants to select which mentor they would like to be paired with.
-
The mentor profiles will be made available for applicants to peruse and choose the best fit mentor for their needs.
-
Mentors will receive a short-list of the applicants that chose them, and will select their choice of mentee on a first-come first-served basis.
-
Once a mentor has selected their mentee and the pair has been established, the mentor profile will be removed from the page.
-
Once all mentors have been paired with the prospective mentees, the programme will be closed until the next round opens up following reviews of the outcomes of this pilot program.
